Acquisition and Processing of Materials

The following types of materials maybe acquired:
  1. Books
  2. Periodicals
  3. Teacher resources
  4. Audio-Visual materials
  5. Equipment
  6. Realia (Not required to be cataloged)

Books and materials that arrive with processing:

Materials arrive with processing mainly from Follett Library Resources.
When books arrive with processing, the following procedure should be followed:
  1. Verify order against packing slip.
  2. Process materials in the order that they are received.
  3. Apply in-house processing standards (Library stamp on first page and last page; Purchased with Auxiliary Funds stamp on first page if appropriate; Date Due slip adhered to last available page in book).
  4. Upload MARC records to Alexandria.
  5. Shelve materials properly.

Books and materials that arrive without processing:

  1. Verify order against packing slip.
  2. Books: Affix barcode to upper left quadrant of front cover, taking care not to cover the book's title. Create spine labels according to rules set forth on Classification and Labeling page, and affix spine labels to lower spine. Cover barcodes and spine labels with protective tape. Apply in-house processing standards as delineated above. Add book to Alexandria by creating appropriate MARC record as delineated on Standards for Cataloging page.
  3. Audio-Visual materials: Affix barcode to case, and write call number in permanent marker directly on item. Follow same procedure as for books set forth above.
  4. Electronic equipment: Create tag for item's case, and affix barcode to one side of tag and Columbus Academy sticker to other side. Add item to Alexandria by creating appropriate MARC record as delineated on Standards for Cataloging page.
